Schloegener Lichtbruecke
Project proposal 1994

In Upper Austria, the Danube carves a deep S-curve in the hills of the Bohemian Plate, flowing southeast, then northwest and back again. The serpentine curve is known as the Schloegener Schlinge

A wire cable (10 000 feet) spans all three valleys. 25 sails are attached to the cable in each river valley. Granite blocks, each weighing about 550 pound, are suspended from various lengths of steel cables connected to the sails. They prevent the wind from twisting the sails and form an oscillating bridge over each river valley. From the distance, the seemingly floating granite arches resemble viaducts, a reference to the fact that the Danube was once the border between the Roman Empire and the Teutonic civilization and the demarcation line between the American and Russian zones occupied in WWII.
